Creating Community with The Wizard of Oz

This year’s Senior Theatre Production of The Wizard of Oz resulted in much more than a great show. Grade 10 student, Allie Vahramian, who played the role of Dorothy and is the Assistant Head of Drama this year, shares her experience here:
The Wizard of Oz took place in the Performing Arts Centre from November 20-22. Over 60 Senior School students worked together to weave a stunning tale of friendship, hope and perseverance.

From acting on stage and making posters to promote the show, to playing in the orchestra, this show brought many opportunities for students to get involved. This year, I had the immense pleasure of being part of the wonderful onstage cast. We were supported by the most amazing faculty members who directed and guided us, organized music and choreography and facilitated the set design. Their unceasing encouragement and support helped us all reach our full potential and made the process of putting on the show memorable.

The sense of community that hosting a dramatic production fosters is so valuable, and I met so many wonderful people from different grades whom I would have never met otherwise. I know I will stay friends with them for a long time.

The Senior Theatre Production has encouraged me to come out of my shell and be confident in myself, even if things don’t go as well as planned. It has taught me to adapt, to be daring and how to be a part of something much bigger than myself. I know I speak for everyone in the cast when I say that The Wizard of Oz was the highlight of our year.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.

Setting the new standard for girls' education everywhere takes collective action. From all of us.
