Community Engagement

Part of Branksome’s mission is to “shape a better world” and students live this through giving service to others. They enthusiastically commit to caring for others, challenging themselves to support a person or a community.

Junior School 'Together We Can'
When it comes to enthusiastic community service, it’s hard to beat the Junior School girls, who are encouraged to take action based on their learning. The Action Committee is led by Grade 6 students, who are mentored by their teacher sponsors. Together, they explore how they can take action for themselves and their school, how they can take action for their community and how they can take action for their world.

Local Community Engagement
We need look no further than our own Toronto community for opportunities to offer service. Local organizations that need caring volunteers seek out Branksome’s students for a wide range of roles, from volunteering in peer math tutoring to Best Buddies and Horizons.

International Community Engagement
As a globally minded girls’ school, Branksome Hall values global leadership, not only as an attribute of the 21st century but as an attribute that is integral to our school. Students find many ways to support global projects and assist agencies working throughout the world. Our budding scientists, economists, teachers and doctors use their intellect, emotion and physical strength to help communities and organizations abroad.

Faculty and staff believe in modelling the behaviours we expect from our students, while, at the same time, learning from their example.

Community Engagement Opportunities

  • Adaptive Technology Club +

    Students from Grade 7-12 are invited to participate in this after-school club, which creates innovative and adaptive technology to support the special needs of students at our partner school, Sunny View Public School, and others in the GTA. The program occurs once a week at Branksome Hall. Students have built communication boards, rewired stimulus response toys and are using the design cycle to innovate with adaptive technology.
  • JUMP Math +

    Junior Undiscovered Math Prodigies (JUMP) is a program at Rose Avenue Public School, our Triangle of Hope partner school, available to senior students wishing to support younger students in acquiring Math skills. Branksome students also practise and further develop their own skills, such as patience, organization, creativity and empathy.
  • Kapapamahchakwew (Wandering Spirit School) Reading Program +

    Senior School students travel to Kapapamahchakwew (Wandering Spirit School) to support students with their literacy skills and to help foster a love of reading. Branksome students also practice and further develop their own skills, such as patience, intercultural understanding, creativity, empathy and time management.
  • Let's Grow Learning and Living Hub +

    Let's Grow Learning and Living Hub is a Toronto-based day program for medically complex, physically disabled adults. Branksome grade 10 theatre students have collaborated with Let's Grow community members to reimagine typical theatre experiences by exploring relaxed performances. Together, they created a clown show which allowed everyone to engage naturally and be celebrated for who they are. 

    Let's Grow has also used the Branksome pool for parties and active games, with Branksome Hall students participating as volunteers.
  • Reading Buddies +

    As part of our Triangle of Hope partnership, senior Branksome Hall students travel to Rose Avenue Public School to work with elementary school-aged children. Branksome students support Rose Avenue students in developing their literacy skills and help foster a love of reading. Branksome students also practise and further develop their own skills, such as patience, creativity, empathy and time management.
  • Sunny View Public School Partnership +

    Senior School students travel to Sunny View Public School a congregated special education setting for students with complex physical and health needs, to engage with students in their classes. The program is intended to provide an opportunity for Sunny View students to have more one-on-one support for class activities, and for Branksome students to develop their understanding and appreciation for the diversity of experiences people have.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.*
